I’m sitting at a round table that sits three tables away from the subject. Three people surround me and ask me questions. I interrupt to tell them that I am focused elsewhere. How was your night? It was decent….people didn’t go out much though. I think it’s because Thursday and Friday were rowdy. He talks to the girl. They are having a good conversation. The girl talks more – he listens. She is telling him about last night or some recent problem with a friend. She looks somewhat frustrated and speaks emphatically. He stares away sometimes observing the mountains – his subject. Yo dude, have you spoke to Will today? Negative, but we should give him a call since he is leaving today. Yeah, can I use your phone? Sure. He speaks now. He is focused on letting her know that everything is fine – don’t worry. Maybe they are going out. Maybe they played tonsil hockey last night. He is calm and suave. The conversation is clearly not awkward. Yo, I can’t believe Will is leaving today? Yeah, it’s going to be weird. I’m interested to see if things change though. I wonder if our whole scene will change. Yeah, agreed. I don’t think it will be too different though. It’s only one person. Word. I can’t talk my subject looks flustered. Back to the subject…He’s been drilled with something. They must be together or they are good friends. He is embarrassed – no he’s annoyed. She’s being difficult. She talks a lot and raises her voice as he keeps looking to interrupt. He mutters a zinger and they laugh. They get up and he looks at his subject and observes.
Stranger Study 2
January 14, 2008He sits across from a girl. His posture is relaxed and welcoming – tucking his leg to his chest and resting his shoe on his chair. He bobs his head in conversation while his adam’s apple moves up and down as he swallows. His eyes are focused on the girl; they are alone. He maintains eye contact and then looks away when it becomes excessive, usually glancing at the mountains in the distance. Occasionally he looks at his cell phone, but it hasn’t rung or vibrated. He could be checking the time, though his watch does sit more conveniently on his wrist. When he grabs his phone, he covers the face and then looks through his skinny fingers at something. Sometimes he plays with his food: an orange, a pink smoothie, and remnants of french toast. The plate looks sticky and he pricks at the food with a fork. It too is sticky so he wipes his hand. Now it is time to speak – his response is brief and he starts listening again. He looks at her eyes – he holds them there for a while. He seems to disagree and is flustered. Redness fills his cheeks, and his gaze becomes more intense as he scratches his grainy hair with his seemingly weak hand. I was wrong – he laughs as they pick up their plates to leave.
Stranger Study
January 14, 2008He’s scrawny – a young adult around twenty. His hair is short, and it flows perfectly into a haven’t-shaved-in-a-week beard. It’s all the same color – a light brown. The hair is prickly and uncontrolled; it would probably be curly if it were longer. His nose isn’t large, but still bigger than an average nose. It’s sharp, probably aerodynamic. His eyes are probably hazel or brown, but I can’t really tell. His eyes are widely opened, and his cheekbones are strong. His head has an oblong shape – it looks like a small egg has been planted on the back. The short hair makes the crevices and lumps more visible. His head is not a perfect circle; his temples are deep giving an intellectual vibe. His mouth is small, and his lips are thin and properly moisturized. His chin is neither pointy nor square – it’s rounded. His shirt is a pastel shade of purple and it is large – an oxford button down. It is totally unbuttoned and slightly wrinkled. The look isn’t rough or formal; it’s more of a mix that is probably a result of a late night with no shower or change of clothes. The shirt sleeves are rolled exposing excessive arm hair and a circular, metal watch. It’s face is large. Underneath his button down is a textured undershirt. It clearly is worn for warmth since it resembles a thermal. His jeans are perfect length – barely touching his blue and white Addidas classics – and they are darker. They look stiff for a vintage look and feel, and they are certainly an annoyance when moving. They would rip if worn during a time of excessive movement. The shoes are fresh. They look new and clean – crisp. They add to the look well.
